This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Chinese government's restoration of sovereignty over Macao. For Australian expat Jerry, Macao has entered a new phase of development in recent years, emerging as a diverse, friendly, and charming place. Let's take a closer look at Macao through the eyes of an expat.

大家好，我是杰瑞。我在中山已經(jīng)住了20多年了，那里距離澳門僅約40公里。就在我來到這兒的五年前，1999年12月20日，中國政府恢復(fù)對澳門行使主權(quán)，澳門的發(fā)展進(jìn)入了一個新的階段。作為一位住在在大灣區(qū)的外國人，我有幸多次去到澳門。
Hello everyone. I'm Jerry, and I've been living in Zhongshan, which is only about 40 kilometers from Macao, for over 20 years. Just five years before I arrived here, on December 20, 1999, Chinese government restored its sovereignty over Macao, ushering the city into a new phase of development.
As a foreigner living in the Greater Bay Area, I've been lucky enough to visit Macao many times.
觀察世事變遷是很有趣的一件事情。我第一次來到這里時，過關(guān)非常緩慢。以前，從珠海的拱北口岸過關(guān)，要花好幾個小時?，F(xiàn)在，有好幾種方式可以過關(guān)，都很方便快捷。今天在這里，我們僅用了不到10分鐘的時間就通過了雙重安檢。
It's been interesting to watch how the place has changed. When I first came here, it was a very slow process. Leaving the Mainland at Gongbei in Zhuhai used to take several hours, nowadays, we have several different crossing options, and it's so easy. When we arrived here, we were through the double checkpoint in less than 10 minutes.?
澳門素以博彩業(yè)與旅游業(yè)聞名。然而令我頗感意外的是，這些生意顯然在當(dāng)時并不景氣，而如今卻呈現(xiàn)出蓬勃興盛之態(tài)。當(dāng)漫步于街頭時，便能明顯看出，很多人來這兒不僅僅是為了娛樂，澳門正通過諸多途徑實(shí)現(xiàn)多元化的發(fā)展。
Macao was famous for gambling and tourism, but surprisingly for me, it was clear that those businesses weren't doing very well back then. Now, though, they are thriving. Clearly, if you look around the streets, it's obvious that many people don't come here just for gambling, the region is diversifying and growing in many other ways.
我已記不清自己去過多少次澳門了，粗略估計(jì)一下，可能有20多次。每一次踏上這片土地，我都會為其多樣性驚嘆不已，而這也恰恰是我這般喜愛此地的緣由所在。在短短數(shù)分鐘之內(nèi)，剛從一座時尚現(xiàn)代且奢華絢麗的建筑處轉(zhuǎn)過一個彎，便踏入了一個古老的廣東小鎮(zhèn)。這里彌漫著濃郁的嶺南文化氣息，滿是令人垂涎的地道美食。不多時，我們還可以停下來，走進(jìn)一家葡萄牙餐館享用美食。無論是亞洲風(fēng)情還是歐洲魅力，澳門都有你想要的。
I can't remember how many times I've been to Macao, but I'm gonna guess it's more than 20. And each time I come here, I'm amazed by the diversification. This is what I like so much about the region. In the space of just a few minutes, we move from an ultra modern casino, with all the glamour and glitz, and we find ourselves turning a corner into an ancient Cantonese town with Lingnan culture, local foods and drinks. Moments later, we can stop for a meal in a Portuguese restaurant. Whatever it is that you like about Asia or Europe, you can find it here in Macao.
澳門真正觸動我的是這里的人們友好熱情，交通快捷便利。雖然地方不大，但有很多公共汽車，有輕軌，的士隨處可見，并且因?yàn)樗胤讲淮?，所以去哪兒都很容易。然而，受限于空間，澳門也存在較為擁擠的問題。2021 年，隨著珠海橫琴被提議設(shè)立為粵澳深度合作區(qū)，這一狀況得到了一定的緩解。
What really inspires me about Macao is the friendliness of the place and how easy it is to get around. For such a small region, there are plenty of buses. There's a light rail system, and taxes are everywhere. Because it's not large, it's also quite easy to walk around many places too. But because of the space limitations, there were some issues with how the region could grow as it was pretty crowded. These concerns were eased in 2021, when it was proposed to use Hengqin, a part of Zhuhai, as the Deep Coorperation Zone.?
橫琴的加入為澳門帶來了諸多好處：它為澳門的企業(yè)提供了更廣闊的發(fā)展空間，為澳門的企業(yè)敲開了更多中國（內(nèi)地）客戶的大門，中國（內(nèi)地）企業(yè)可以更容易地進(jìn)入澳門市場。一個龐大的大學(xué)體系和科研機(jī)構(gòu)體系正在蓬勃發(fā)展, 這意味著澳門的多元化將持續(xù)推進(jìn)。
The addition of Hengqin has done several things for Macao. It allowed the businesses here to expand into more space. It opened Macao's businesses to more Chinese clients and Chinese businesses can access Macao’s markets easier. A great system of universities and science institutions is growing, and that means Macao's diversification will continue.
